Questions we hear a lot
How often should a chimney be inspected or cleaned?
The national fire-safety standard for chimneys (NFPA 211) recommends an inspection every year. Whether it needs a cleaning depends on how much you burn and how much buildup we find. A fireplace used every weekend in winter usually needs one; one used a few times a year may not.
What is creosote, and why does it matter?
Creosote is the tar-like residue that wood smoke leaves on the inside of the flue. It’s flammable, and heavy buildup is the most common cause of chimney fires. It also causes that smoky smell on humid summer days.
Do I need a chimney inspection when I sell my house?
NFPA 211 calls for a Level 2 inspection, which includes a camera scan of the flue, whenever a property is sold. Many buyers, attorneys, and insurers ask for one. We provide a written report with photos.
We switched from oil to gas. Does the chimney need anything?
Often, yes. Gas appliances produce cooler, wetter exhaust than oil, and an old clay-tile flue that is oversized or cracked may not vent it safely. We inspect the flue and tell you whether a new liner is needed.
How often should air ducts and dryer vents be cleaned?
Dryer vents about once a year for most homes. Air ducts don’t follow a fixed schedule. The EPA suggests cleaning when there’s heavy dust or debris, signs of pests, or visible mold, and many homes go several years between cleanings. We’ll show you footage and tell you honestly if yours can wait.
Can you do the chimney and air ducts in the same visit?
Usually, yes. Tell us what you need when you call or in the form, and we’ll plan the visit to cover both.
Do you handle emergencies at night and on weekends?
Yes. Our line is answered 24/7. If you smell smoke in the house, hear a roaring sound from the chimney, or see sparks at the top, get everyone out and call 911 first. Call us once it’s safe.
